Falling Down the Rabbit Hole: Heritage Christian’s “Alice By Heart”

by | Mar. 10, 2026

Over the course of six performances across two weekends, Heritage Christian’s Performing Arts Department transported audiences down the rabbit hole and into the imaginative, heart-wrenching world of Alice By Heart. What unfolded on stage was more than just a school musical, it was a moving exploration of love, loss, imagination, and resilience that captivated audiences night after night.

Unlike the bright, whimsical versions of Alice in Wonderland many grew up with, Alice By Heart challenges both performers and audiences with its emotional depth. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story follows Alice Spencer as she uses imagination and storytelling to cope with fear and grief. The result was a production that lingered long after the final bow; a show that invited audiences not just to watch, but to feel.

From opening night to the final curtain call of the sixth performance, the cast demonstrated remarkable emotional maturity and consistency. Each performer embraced their role with vulnerability and intention, bringing complex characters to life with authenticity. The leads carried the weight of the story beautifully, while the ensemble worked to create atmosphere, tension, and moments of wonder through movement and harmony.

The musical score, known for its difficulty and emotional intensity, was delivered with both technical strength and heartfelt expression. Harmonies were rich and purposeful, and each song advanced the narrative rather than simply filling space. Quiet, tender moments were met with complete stillness from the audience; a testament to how deeply the performances resonated.

Choreography and movement added another layer of storytelling. Rather than relying on spectacle alone, the show used fluid, symbolic staging to reflect the chaos of war and the comfort of imagination. Blocking was thoughtful and dynamic, ensuring every moment on stage felt intentional and visually compelling.

Behind the scenes, the production was equally impressive. Seamless transitions, carefully timed lighting cues, and balanced sound design elevated the storytelling. The technical crew worked tirelessly to ensure that every shift in tone — from whimsical to haunting — was supported visually and aurally. From stage management to middle school assistants, every crew member played a vital role in the show’s success.

Leadership within the cast also helped shape the production into something truly special. Senior Fiona Sarkissian reflected on her unique dual role:

“I got the opportunity to play Alice, Queen of Hearts AND be a Student Director all at the same time. Those roles in leadership behind the scenes and on stage really challenged me to lead with intention and stretch myself and others to perform as best as possible. The behind the scenes process was stressful at times, but so rewarding to see it come to fruition. The cast, crew and directors made this show a wonderful experience and opportunity and I am so grateful I got to be a part of it.”

Her experience captures the heart of this production: growth, collaboration, and dedication. Balancing leadership responsibilities while performing at such an emotional level required discipline, vision, and resilience.

The director, Mrs. Kat, musical director, Miss Altig, and two student directors, Sophie Hoff and Fiona Sarkissian, fostered a safe and encouraging environment where students could take creative risks. Months of rehearsals, late-night tech runs, and careful refinement resulted in a cohesive and polished final product. Every detail, from costuming to lighting to staging, reflected intentional artistry and passionate commitment.

In many schools, performing arts programs operate with limited resources. Yet Heritage Christian continues to prove that dedication, teamwork, and faith can transform limitations into opportunities. This six-show run was a testament to the power of storytelling and the strength of a unified community working toward a shared goal.

It truly takes a village to bring a story to life, and Alice By Heart was no exception. From the actors on stage to the technicians in the booth, from the set builders working endlessly to create beautiful scenery, from directors to parent volunteers, every individual contributed a vital piece of the puzzle. The result was a production that was not only technically strong but deeply meaningful.
