EA is Bringing New Fans to Skateboarding with skate.

On September 16, 2025, a 15 year silence was broken. A new game in the Skate franchise was finally released in early access by EA. The game received much praise for its gameplay familiarity to previous Skate games, as well as its physics. However, that isn’t to say the game isn’t without its controversies.

Much of the games popularity is fueled by nostalgia from fans returning to the series, seeing the game through a pair of rose colored lenses. Many newer fans and people who see through the nostalgia are criticizing EA for the sheer amount of microtransactions in a game that’s still in early access, as well as the “cartoony” and unserious art style that the game took on; with many fans reporting they prefer the older, but more realistic art style that Skate 3 took over the current art style of Skate. All of these concerns are relevant, but the most important question is, “Is the game fun?”. In my opinion—yes. The game may be imperfect, and it does require some adjusting of settings before the game actually feels good, but it is worth playing, especially being free. There is something special about turning off the game’s music (which isn’t really good to begin with), turning on Spotify, and just messing around in a skatepark.

But what do other people think? The game currently sits at a mixed score of 3.85/5 on Steam with over 30,000 reviews, with an additional 30,000 reviews on Playstation. Despite this, lobbies are usually full, and many people are very pleased with the game despite its many imperfections. You can find the game on Steam, Playstation, Xbox, and PC, and on the Skate website at https://www.ea.com/games/skate.
