Heritage Christian School’s South Campus in North Hills has flipped the switch with a major makeover—four massive stadium lights now illuminate its athletic field for night games. The project, finally greenlit by the city and neighbors, after 30+ years, is a first for the school’s athletic program and campus life.
The lights debuted in the team’s first home game against San Marino with a new look to the field, and the event was a success. Alumni, families, and students packed the stands to not only watch the football team but also have the chance to be part of history with a traditional Friday night lights atmosphere. The addition was universally praised, with one stating the new setting was “electric”.
The placement of the lights was not simple. Because the school is in a residential area, Heritage had to get permits from the City of Los Angeles. Concerns about noise, traffic, and light pollution were spoken about at the community meetings. School administrators assured residents that the lights would be placed so that glare would be minimized and that schedules for games would take quiet hours into consideration.
The project was also a huge investment. Stadium lighting in high school can cost anywhere between $200,000 and $400,000, depending on installation, wiring, and pole height. Heritage Christian has declined to disclose the actual money spent, but it’s a clear reflection of the school’s commitment to improving its sporting facilities.
For Heritage, the payoff is greater than monetary. Friday night football is an institution of American high school culture, and being able to host night games puts the program at the same level as other schools across Southern California. Administrators said the lights will not only improve school spirit but also allow for more chances for student-athletes to play in front of larger audiences.
Neighbors who had at first been opposed, later joined in to enjoy the concession provided by the school. Changes in parking management, orientation of lights, and event scheduling were all part of the negotiation.
With the first game under the lights now behind them, Heritage Christian is looking towards a new season with a well-lit field. Players are already looking forward to what is being hailed as the start of a new tradition: Friday nights in North Hills, bright and unforgettable.
