The varsity girls’ lacrosse team faced a tough opponent this week in Westridge School, falling 7-2—but the final score tells only part of the story.
After suffering 19–0 and 18–1 losses to Westridge last season, the Warriors showed measurable growth, resilience and defensive strength in this year’s matchup.
From the opening draw, Heritage competed with intensity. The Warriors’ defense applied consistent pressure, refusing to allow Westridge easy entry into scoring position. Goalkeeper, Sophia German, delivered multiple key saves, including several penalty-shot stops, keeping the game within reach and energizing the sideline.
Sophomore, Dayla Ireton, gave Heritage its first goal with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter after an aggressive cross-field run that resulted in a composed finish. The play highlighted the Warriors’ willingness to attack in transition.
Throughout the second and third quarters, Heritage’s defensive unit continued to battle. Though Westridge capitalized on several penalty opportunities, Heritage never let the game slip into the kind of high-scoring margin seen in previous seasons.
Senior, Sam Rosales, added the Warriors’ second goal in the fourth quarter, finishing a determined effort despite heavy defensive pressure. Rosales also reflected on the team’s progress after the game.
“Though we lost 7-2, it was still a great game. The team showed true grit. We’re looking tougher and stronger, and we’re ready for the next match.”
Senior, Team Captain
That mindset echoed throughout the sideline. Compared to last year’s lopsided results, holding Westridge to seven goals marks significant improvement. The Warriors demonstrated stronger communication, tighter defensive rotations and a noticeable increase in physical play.
While the scoreboard favored Westridge, the Warriors left the field with something just as important—proof that they are growing stronger and more determined every season.
